A Puppy’s Life: Hard Decisions and Starting a New Chapter
I want to share a story w
ith everyone that for most professional dog trainers would have been swept under the rug, or glossed over. Our main goal here at Creative Dog Training is Helping Dogs through Educating People, so everyone here felt compelled to make sure this story was told. It involves my (now former) Havane
se puppy, Turbo, and our family’s decision to give him up. This wasn’t an easy choice, and it’s damn sure not something to take lightly. But it does have to happen on occasion, and I wanted people to understand that even professional trainers can make the wrong choices.
The Incident
One Saturday morning, my 8-year-old son, Cooper, and our Havanese puppy, Turbo, were watching TV together on the bed. All was well until Cooper rushed out of the room crying and holding his face. I assumed that Turbo had scratched him while playing, but he had actually bitten Cooper just under his eye. After we checked out Cooper and got the situation under control, we started to unravel what happened.
Several things had led to causing a problem. Turbo was on the bed, which is a big problem - it makes the puppy feel like they are equal to you in the pack order. This is especially bad when children are involved because the dogs already see themselves as equals. They were playing with a toy and getting a bit out of control - rough play with a spirited puppy is okay, but must be done with rules. All these factors resulted in Turbo deciding to jump up and bite Cooper on the face.
We let the rest of the day pass, monitoring the kids’ interaction with Turbo much more closely. We also keep reminding ourselves that the incident was just as much our fault as it was Turbo’s. Now, that doesn’t excuse him - I know that he is a puppy and will make mistakes - but we need to see how the relationship between the kids and the puppy has been affected.
Moving Forward
The next day the family sat down and discussed what to do from this day forward with Turbo. The first question was, “Are you guys afraid of him?” Cooper and Lily (my 6 year old daughter) said “No”, but you could tell they were hesitant. We talked about our steps that are going to be taken to fix the relationship.
First things first, we decided Turbo was to head to a week of boot camp. During this time he will get at least 6 training sessions per day and receive 3 play sessions with the other pups. This was especially important because we needed him to learn correct and incorrect ways of using his mouth. We also needed him to follow commands without question (leave it, off, no, etc.). Then we planned to have lessons together with a trainer at the facility.
Looking at Our Family and Needs
After Turbo was discussed, we changed focus to ourselves. Newly enforced rules for us would include Turbo being only on the floor (at least for a while), controlling our type of play with him, and incorporating more training into our daily lives.
We also kept in touch with his breeder to let them know what happened and the steps we were taking to keep Turbo as a member of our family. While they were not happy about the incident, they were very glad to be kept in the loop. They reassured us that if he was not going to be the perfect member of our family, then they had many people lined up to take him. Knowing we had options made us feel better.
Turbo the Show Dog
Turbo was bred to be a show dog. If you’ve never dealt with a dog bred to be actively shown in breed rings and earn a championship (think Westminster Dog Show), let me explain. All this means he is very spirited, is very sure of himself, and has only 2 speeds (asleep and wide open). Plus, since he’s a show dog he would have to stay unneutered, which means his testosterone will only make him more spirited and a bit more likely to be dominant. Having grown up going to every dog show in the South, shown MANY dogs myself, and owned many show dogs from Labs, Goldens, German Shepherds, Australian Shepherd, to Rottweilers - I knew what I was getting into, and knew that my wife and I could handle having a dog like that. But it’s not just us in the house.
We knew all these fact going into bringing Turbo to our family; what we didn’t know was how the interaction between Cooper (who possesses the same 2 speeds) and Turbo would mesh. We had many conversations with Cooper (and the rest of the family) about how to interact with Turbo and how our time spent with him was always training him – whether good or bad.
What we didn’t think hard enough about was human nature, and how everyday life can affect even the most well-meaning decisions
Making the Hard Decision
Brandy and I sat down and had a talk about Turbo. The talk centered around why we got him, who he was really for, and if he is going to fit our family dynamic. We tried to be very honest with ourselves.
During his boot camp, my wife Brandy and the kids went on a trip where they encountered a Golden/Labrador Retriever mix. All I could hear from them was how much they missed our Golden Retriever, Willow, who we lost to cancer before we got Turbo.
After looking at all the facts, we decided that he was chosen for all the wrong reasons. We started off wanting a pet to replace our goofy, fun loving, playful Golden Retriever who would wrestle with the kids and follow them around with the adoring eyes of a retriever. But we ended up trying to fit a square peg in a round hole, when it came time to make the decision by putting restrictions like non-shedding and being a small, lap pup. I’m not saying that those qualities don’t make for good dogs for kids, but they do restrict your options. Most importantly, your dog needs to mesh with the personalities of everyone in your house.
Ultimately we decided that Turbo was not a good fit for our family, no matter what we do.
Taking Action
After our talk, we sat down with the kids and told them about our thoughts and ultimate decision to give Turbo back to his breeder. After all the difficulties they had been through with Turbo and the strong reminder about how much they missed having a big retriever around, they were not as upset by the news as we had expected them to be.
Stanley, Turbo’s breeder who we talked to often during this process, picked him up after his week of boot camp was done. We had all of Turbo’s shot records and information transferred back to Stanley. In his new home Turbo has flourished! He has already won 2 shows since leaving our home and is now on his way to being a breed champion because the new family has time to nurture that side of his personality.
Brandy and I learned some very important things during our short life with Turbo. The main lesson being that the interaction between the children and our new dog will always be the focus. Everything else can be 2nd, 3rd, 4th and so on. Everyone’s safety and happiness is what is most important. Fortunately, we were able to send Turbo to a more appropriate home. If you have to part ways with your dog, please be sure to find them a good home.
A Note
At Creative Dog Training, we do believe strongly in ‘forever homes’, and NEVER getting a dog unless you are fully committed to doing everything possible to make things work. BUT, that being said, some times the best thing possible is to find a new loving and caring home for your dog.
Our ultimate decision was made on this fact: If we kept Turbo, did all the training necessary, taught the kids how to handle EVERY interaction, something could still go wrong and it would be Turbo that pays the ultimate price with his life.
If a dog bites anyone, it’s a serious offense. If a dog bites a child, for any reason (whether it was the child’s fault or not), it is cause for alarm. At Creative Dog Training we do not take a biting dog lightly, and will do everything in our power to help the situation. But at the end of the day, we are caretakers of the dog, and we need to decide how best to protect everyone from harm.
Like I said at the beginning, this is a topic most people would avoid, but we wanted to talk about it because it is real life and real dilemmas that people are put in. I was lucky having a breeder so willing to take the dog back, but there are always resources and avenues for help. We hope this was enlightening and at least a little thought provoking.
