I have an 11 year old cocker that I love to death, but that I sorely mistreated - I spoiled her rotten and came up very short on discipline. Regardless she is still a very sweet dog.

I married recently and just before my wife got preganant she got a new puppy. Needless to say, today we have an old dog, a 1 year old puppy, and (today) a 9 month old.

My dilemma is that between my wife and the baby, I have little to no time to spend training the dogs. I have realized that they both need it.

At this point I am desperate for help, advice, and in the process (some compassion). I love the dogs as I love my wife and baby.

Thank you for your question! It sounds like you have your hands full.

Have you considered sending your dogs to bootcamp? It takes time and repetition to train effectively. The oldest dog that we have had benefit from bootcamp was 15. His family was amazed at what he learned.

Make sure that the program you choose involves you as well as your 2 dogs. We keep your dogs for 3 weeks. During that time we ask that you come and work with them at least 3 times.

We are often asked if the dog will listen when he comes home. The answer has three parts.

First we use multiple trainers to train your dog. This teaches your dog that he listens to everyone instead of just one person.

Second, we teach you how to maintain your dog’s training in the home environment. It does not require any more time then you are currently spending. You learn to restructure that time.

Finally remember that the person they are serving did not train the guide dog or police dog. A professional trainer trained the dog.

Your dogs will be able to be with you more as they improve their manners.

Another suggestion is to take our on-line class. You can learn at your own pace at home. I hope this helps! Thank you, Margaret

PLEASE NOTE:
The advice I gave was specific to the question I was answering. It may not be exactly what you need for your dog and situation. If you are having a similar problem, please post something so we can help.

Also remember, this is just my advice to what I've read here, please consult a trainer in your area for detailed help.
