How do I stop our dogs from digging holes in our yard

The bottomline is that I need to learn how to teach our dogs to stop digging holes in our yard. Help!!!

Thank you for your question! The answer depends on the main reason for the digging. It might be caused by boredom, hunting, or instinct to mention a few. Try making the digging less pleasant by sprinkling cayenne pepper or hot paprika (my favorite) liberally in the holes. Try placing the dogs own feces in the hole and covering it with loose dirt. We have had success with a sound interrupt from inside the house such as a hand held boat horn or an ultrasonic device. Increase your dog's exercise with regular walks. Consider giving your dogs alternative behaviors such as a tether ball tried to a tree, a digging pit like a sand box for children, hollow sterilized bones and knuckle bones. Avoid scolding and showing the dog the holes - this tends to only create an 'owner absent' problem. This means he avoids the behavior when you are watching but does not avoid it when you are gone.
