Hi guys,

Our well behaved and well house-trained, 9 month old puppy has started an odd behavior. He has started peeing in his "own" areas of the house.

For example, he loves to sit up on our couch and look out the window to the street, and we have a blanket set up for him to lie on and watch. Well, there has been a few times where we have found that he has peed on the blanket there. (We've also noticed him digging at the blanket at times.)

He always sleeps in our bedroom with us. He used to always sleep in his kennel with the door closed, but for the last month, we've granted him some freedom and allowed him to sleep on the floor in our room with the kennel door open. He will either sleep in the kennel or on one of the bedside matts. There have been a couple incidents lately where he has peed inside his kennel or on the bedside matt.

Anwyay, the trend is that he is only peeing on the areas that he may think are "his." Could this be a form of marking his territory?

We are wondering how to stop this behavior. We've listened to your all of your podcasts, including the most recent one on housetraining lapses (which was conveniently timed!). When we aren't able to watch him, I am guessing that he will have to be confined to a small enough area that he won't pee in?

Thanks for the question Brian. When my 8 mth golden started doing the same thing i just took some of those big girl privledges away for a while. Back to the crate at night, off the couch. I know u said "he" is he neutered or not?? That could always help. When i started to take willow's fun things away she started being housetrained again very quickly. Also remember u are falling into a big trap.........NONE of the areas of the house are his..........if they were then peeing on them would be completely ok in his mind, if that is what he wanted.
