Sometimes when I do settle down with my puppy, he does it well; but other times he wants to contstantly tug on the leash or chew it. Could this be due to him not being in a state to settle down at that particular time? For example, he might need to go for a walk to burn off some energy? Is there anything we can do to deter him from chewing the leash and tugging on it to try to get it out from under my foot?

I am having the same issue. My puppy (a 7 month old puggle) REFUSES to settle down. HE will do whatever it takes to avoid it. I have tried bitter apple on the leash, and that doesn't work. I have been doing this for 30 minutes daily (sometimes twice daily) and no progress.

Interestingly, we have perfected the goalie game....

I would LOVE any suggestions about how to break my strong willed child!!!

Thank you for your question! I sympathize with your dilemma. I have experienced with this myself and have heard from several clients with similar issues.

I have found that pups with settle down issues also have general restraint ones as well. How is your puppy when you hold him still in your arms? How does he respond to handling his feet, opening his mouth and holding his chin gently in your hands when you ask him to look at you?

Have you listened to our podcast on accepting gentle handling?

Have you tried switching to a chain leash? This makes leash chewing less enjoyable for your dog.

I also wonder how your dog does on walks. Does he walk beside you on a loose leash?

I often wonder how well my advice translates in to real life situations. Please explain to me exactly how you practice ‘settle down’. I would like to know where, when, how short the leash is under your foot and exactly what your dog’s reaction is.

Thank you in advance for your input! Margaret Davis

Everyone at Creative Dog Training thanks you for taking the time to read our message board!

PLEASE NOTE:
The advice I gave was specific to the question I was answering. It may not be exactly what you need for your dog and situation. If you are having a similar problem, please post something so we can help.

Also remember, this is just my advice to what I've read here, please consult a trainer in your area for detailed help.

Thank You

Just to add a bit to Margaret's reply.......It always gets better. We have never had a dog that would not do a settle down. Believe it or not you are in the majority on this question. If you haven't gotten to leave it yet it will really help with the leash. Also the second set of classes with the 3rd step on settle down will help to make things esier also. Just be consistant and don't give up or in.
P.S. If a little bitter apple dosen't work, try a bunch!!
