I have a wonderful 9 week old female German Shepherd puppy. We've only had her home a couple of days but she is already terribly confused. We take her outside to the spot we'd like her to use for a bathroom and stay there with her for long periods of time. She'll smell everything, chew on a stick or two, chase a butterfly, etc. and then lay down sweetly at my feet. As soon as I take her back in the house she goes to the bathroom! How do I get her to switch to going outside without having to spend the whole day out there. I'm taking her out upon waking, after breakfast and then at about 30 min intervals during the day.

Thank you for your question! It does sound like your puppy is confused.

Limit the time outside to 10 minutes. Keep her moving, as motion tends to stimulate puppies to go. Use your leash inside to prevent her from running to the bedroom. Redirect her to outside as you notice she is trying to get to her favorite place.

You will find the easy leash training method under training tips at the website.

Taking your puppy out every 30 minutes will unintentionally condition her to want to go every 30 minutes. Be sure to listen to our podcast on housetraining to learn the 3 rules of housetraining.

I hope this helps! Keep us informed of your progress. Margaret Davis
